My Hatred for Talk Show Interviews

Like many other pretend adults (i.e. 20-somethings), I have forgone cable television. When moving out for the first time a few months ago, my boyfriend and I opted for a simple internet connection rather than any actual cable bundles. With subscriptions to Netflix and HBO, cable is becoming obsolete for the younger generations.

You damn kids.

Another source of entertainment that many people don’t consider is Youtube. Youtube has gone from a website that hosted random  cat videos to a huge entertainment machine. Many celebrities have become to realize the power of Youtube, especially talk show hosts.

Prime example? James Corden. His Carpool Karaoke series is massive in the Youtube community. Other hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and Ellen also post basically all of their regular show content on the web. This has likely increased their viewership, because people would rather choose what their going to watch rather than sit through the full hour-long show, with commercials.

I, for one, love the ability to watch talk show segments online. Prime reason? I can dodge the terrible interviews.

Talk show interviews are one of my biggest objects of hatred. I have compiled a list of reasons that they are literally the worst.

Interviews Suck and Here is Why

1. People are only on the show to pimp-out their new projects

We know why you’re here. You’re here to sell us on something.

2. Basically everything has been rehearsed beforehand. 

The host and guest have gone over their talk before. Hell, the cut that you see may be the third run of the interview.

3. There is rarely an organic moment. 

Talk shows hosts won’t create drama. Everything will be fluffy and cute and unnatural.

 

I hate the fake interest in the guest’s story. The shameless plug for their movies. I’d rather watch someone like Chelsea Handler interview someone, because she isn’t afraid of making people uncomfortable. I understand why things are done the way they are. It makes the show light and funny. But the world is moving from that.

We want authenticity. We want the real shit.
